Mother of teen killed in police shooting sues

Wednesday, Sep 10, 2008 - 11:40:12 am CDT

The Associated Press

SCOTTSBLUFF -- The mother of a 16-year-old boy shot and killed by police last year filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Crawford police chief, another officer and the city.

A Dawes County grand jury indicted Police Chief Rick Thompson last year for second-degree assault in the shooting death of Jesse Britton.

Authorities have said Thompson shot Britton on Oct. 3 in a vacant Crawford bar after Britton didn’t obey orders to lower a gun. Britton and game warden Dan Kling went to the bar looking for the boy, who was a suspect in a string of burglaries.

Thompson has been on unpaid leave since the shooting and has maintained that he acted in self defense.

The lawsuit from Jesse’s mother, Pat Britton, says the shooting was “a result of negligence,” and that both officers showed “malice and callous disregard” for Jesse Britton’s life.

The city, the lawsuit says, failed to train employees how to properly negotiate and keep a situation from escalating.

At what point did it become the cop's fault someone who is pointing a gun at him, doesn't drop it, when told to?

There are only three kinds of liberal/progressives.
1 - The elite, who believes he knows better how to run your life than you.
2 - The incompetent, who truly can't run their lives by themselves.
3 - The ignorant, who can't see what the elites are doing.

This subject (lack of personal responsibility) is actually very dear to me... I see it as the chirping canary in the mine that is our cultural destruction...

I will write more later, but for now let me start by saying that my girl and I were watch the news, and looking for some info on the Hurricane named Ike... I brought up a good point about 24 hours before the News agencies decided to start interviewing Tx Locals...

I said, "Watch... Texans are a different bunch that the rest of this country... You will not hear them bitch or whine about FEMA and such... Just that they will pull through..." unlike the whiney rhetoric you will heared from Katrina...

Sure enough... it came to pass, and when my girl asked me how I knew that, I stated a few key points and some observations I had made in my extensive travels while in the Air Force...

My ony point is this... I don't think it's any suprise that many of our Presidential candidates of the last 60 years or so have been Texans...

This country is WAY to quick to blame anyone but themselves, and will also will take little responsibility for thier own lot in life... It is very sad...

That stupid kid asked for it, and he got it. He should have done as the police officer insisted, IE put the gun down. Maybe he wanted to die. But that was his decision, not that of the officer.

Well done that officer ! Thats some more trash off the street.

I'd say that it's because most Texans are conservative minded Republicans who rely on themselves for the responsibility of their safety, as opposed to the liberal minded Democrats in New Orleans, who are so accustomed to the welfare system that they depend on government to do everything for them.

And I would add that it is also a generational thing. As each generation is raised to be dependant on the government to do their thinking for them and also see themselves as victims in everything. These people lose their ability to stand on their own two feet.

Responsibility is also one of my sensative topics, in fact while I am religious, my reason for not supporting abortions is more because I detest people who kill to escape taking responsibility for their choices.
