A work friend of mine had a '64 1/2 Mustang. But she only had a six in it. Bought it new. (This was way back when)

 

Another friend had a '65 Cuda, 383. He got razzed 'cause he had an automatic.

When I was 16, I bought a bright yellow Chevy Chevette (1981, I think?). It was ugly as sin and smelled musty, but I cleaned it up, filled it with air fresheners, and drove that little junker for years until it finally sh!t out on me.

 

Man, I was so proud of that car because I worked hard, saved my money and bought it myself!

I wrecked the front end stealing it from the back yard so I eventually inherited it. It was believe it or not a 1957 Nova Super Sport. I was born in 1957 so I know for fact of the year this time. I will give props to the Custom 500 though for having a solid engine that never burned oil and got excellent gas mileage and acceleration, and the Grand Prix for having the Turbo 400 tranny and adjustable air shocks..

Then I would get up and go get breakfast and my parents would act like nothing happened. Although in hindsight I should'a got my ass kicked, my parents would act like it was their fault.

LOL!!! My first car was a 76 Grand Prix with a 400, 4 barrel carb, with a turbo 400 and air shocks. I beat many a rival in that car. :D

Don't forget Ford's 454 beast!! If I remember correctly, that was the last engine I have ever rebuilt. It went into my dad's camper. When we first bought the truck for the camper, the 454 in it had been sitting for years. The engine was seized up from rust, it took us almost an hour to get it started again. We had to manually turn the crank shaft to loosen up the pistons. It smoked like hell the whole way from Cozad to Schuyler. I took it over to Drueppel's auto (friends of ours), and tore out the engine, set it on the stand, took it apart, and DAMN the pistons were even rusty. I was shocked we got that thing running at all. Ended up changing every bearing, every freeze plug, every ring, cam, hell everything had to be pretty much redone. I was shocked we didn't blow the engine driving it that far. I remember seeing it before we brought the block to NAPA for the clean-up/honing and after. You couldn't tell it was the same engine. Amazing what an acid dip can do!! But anyways, after it was slapped back together, MAN did that truck have some serious balls. I was surprised because I actually put in a more fuel efficient cam in, no bore, just honed, and OEM pistons, intake and exhaust. The throttle response was just crazy paired up with that 4:11 rear end.Damn, love those old car memories. Almost makes me wanna rebuild another engine for ****s and giggles.

Hmm, my SECOND car was a 76' Grand Prix, 400 2 barrel with air shocks. Don't remember the tranny, but I'm thinking it was a turbo 350. What color was yours? Mine was gray. I never raced anyone with my cars, ever. I liked building engines, just not into racing..

What's the difference between a bore and a hone? I thought that was pretty much the same. Doesn't a hone shave off a little to make it a bore?

Boring it out means you are making the circumference a tad bigger, honing it is putting the cross hatch in it and smoothing out the walls like in this picture.Notice the crossover pattern? That's the hone

I know I had a 250 Kawasaki that was bored to a 302. I wasn't sure what the honing did.

Typically, when you just hone an engine, you sometimes need a bit bigger ring for it if your using the stock pistons. It really depends though on how much you hone. Sometimes you can get by with stock rings, but there is a greater chance of oil seeping through.

We had dirtbikes and such but my first vehicle as a product of being raised in the country doing farm work was of course a truck.

 

1973 ford 4x4 4 speed 360.

 

I had been working and making my own money from the age of 12 doing farm work, construction, and even had a worm bed that made me 50 bucks a week selling them to a local stor that had a good fishing crowd.

 

At 16 I took my own money and purchased the truck from one of the farmers I did side work for topping and suckering tobacco. I don't think the smile and stupid expression faded from my face for an entire year after buying that truck.

 

Your first car (truck) is truly a great experience, at least it was for me.

81 Chevy C-10, only mine was a butt ugly tan color.

 

I did have a van prior to that, which my dad bought for me for $50 and had to rebuld the engine in, but I only drove it twice before trading it for the truck. :)
