With new genetic corn, computer pesticide applications and new fertilization enhancements, corn yields have gone up some 70% (thats a guess). Can this be the answer to both world hunger and alternative fuels?

In the quest for alternative fuels are we forgetting the adverse effects it might have? Is this another terrorist lever that might be used?Biofuels and world hunger

I think biofuels are a good idea.. if food production wasn't constantly being concentrated into fewer and fewer hands as we pave over good farmland for million dollar, vacant ramblers that no one can get a loan to buy anymore because they make $7.50 a day picking produce and send half of it home to Mexico..

My electric bill was 183$ and my gas bill was 119$ last month.. bout sh*t my pants.. 2 years ago this time of year, never above $40 for electric but gas was always high in the winter.... Might be time to go buy a corn burning stove and develop a potato burning generator.. Then after everyone changes over we can fight wars over vegetables as the price goes through the roof..

I like any idea that helps us to move away from imported oil.

There have been stories showing that if we release all patents for fules and fuel economy related items, we could be self-sufficient on our oil needs because of things like making an average car get over 60 miles to a gallon cannot be produced because the owners of the patents will not allow it.

Most if not all stereotypes hold some truth.

Yeah but are people starving to death because we are using corn for fuel instead of food?

They need to find a better source of ethenol than corn anyway. Corn will never get us independant from foreign oil. The only reason ethenol from corn is big right now is that the companies are getting government subsidies for making it. In reality a gallon of ethenol cost more to produce than a gallon of gasoline.

They need to move to something that is much more practicle and renewable (remember you can only harvest corn about once a year in most places). They need to take the money they are giving the ethenol plants to research into other more viable biological sources like switchgrass or something that is hearty in many climates and can be harvested repeatedly throughout the year.

Then we can start planting more sweet corn instead of dimple corn and exporting it internationally.

One of the consequences of such notions as "entitlements" is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.? ~ Thomas Sowell

I think Brazil uses sugarcane to support their 100% energy independence.

Sugar is found in everything, it makes sense.. Our brain uses it exclusively for enery whereas other tissues will use fat and protien if sugar, glucose, is not available. Not the brain though.. all glucose all the time.
