Has Government regulation and overreach gone beyond what we should expect from a civilised society in recent years?

There are a few notable law changes I can think of that have happened in the UK that I'm thinking of specifically in relation to this question - one of them being the changing of the law to make it a criminal offence to smoke in a vehicle carrying a child. While I appreciate that some might think that parents shouldn't smoke in the car with their children present - why is this something the Government is making a law that is criminally punishable?

Things like this tend to annoy me, and I wanna know what others think! Am I overreacting on this specific example?!
