Another Mantis Encounter

So yesterday, I went out to my truck, heading off to get groceries. As I'm

about to open my truck door, I see a GINORMOUS praying mantis sitting just

in front of the collision avoidance light staring RIGHT AT ME. It was

sitting. Just sitting there with it's scary, evil grin.

Just at that moment, I swear, I SWEAR a thought bubble popped up over it's

head that read, "If I was just a little bigger, I'd eat your face off."

In deep fear, I jumped into my truck and drove away. I carefully got out of

my truck when I arrived at the store. No sign of the mantis. I was saved!

Wind resistance saved me from the mantis and from having my face eaten off.

The wind is my friend.

Just be thankful it was not a female mantis in the mating mood...as she

would have eaten your head off for sure..

She was probably sizing him up when he fled.

Even an evil mantis is no match for a 65 MPH wind. I haven't checked, but I

hope it got blown clear of my truck bed. Or at least it has left by now.

I'll put on my protective gear tomorrow and investigate.

Mofoes will try to rip yer face off if you piss 'em off.

Also, if you just walk by one, they turn their heads to watch you go by,

which is pretty eerie for a bug. Even a big bug. With great big eyes.

A "stick bug" is the one bug that's always freaked me out. It's completely

harmless, but it scares the heck out of me for some reason. It's just not

right that a stick should be moving around like that.

I don't care what bugs do as long as they don't attack me.

I've had the infamous Face Full of Mantis before.

Leave the Big Green (Or Sometimes Brown) Bugs alone. I like them.

They're feisty. Wetas would be cool, too (they'll sit on the palm of your

hand and munch on a carrot-- a whole carrot-- when they're not kicking you

in the side of the head from the side of a tree).

It is a bit scary looking but, it is harmless to the human world. Also here

in the USA it is a protected species..it should not be harmed in any way,

shape nor manner.

You're insane. I'd never let one of those blood thirsty monsters sit in my

hand. When that carrot is gone, it's finger time.

Bringing a mantis home and dropping him/her off in the garden used to be

on the list of 'good things for a kid to do'. Like on Saturday. Too bad

the mantis does not go for groundhog and rabbit. They do all right with

potato bugs though.

Wetas are vegetarians, IIRC.

Kind of odd, really, since they resemble one-pound crickets, and crickets

are carnivores.

Is it, legally? other than everyone knowing it's a valuable predator of

insect pests? (as long as you protect your eyes.)

I didn't know that.

Too bad the executioner bugs don't get that big.

No doubt still is, where people are wittingly and seriously home-gardening.

What does Saturday have to do with it? traditional Saturday Mantis Hunts?

or just a day when the kiddies are off school and wand'ring the fields 'n'

woods?

I think they do slugs, too, unless I'm thinking of ground-beetles.

I say we genetically engineer a mantis to be 10 times its normal size.

Then we release it in Tim's neighbourhood for a slap up feast.
