The diversity of life on earth. It's amazing. Like the entire ecosystem

that lives around thermal vents in the ocean with water temps over 700F.

And I like the bacteria that was found "somewhere at some depth" (I forget

the details) that eats hot rock.

That's just mean. And meaningless as I live in Georgia and we like out guns
here. It wouldn't have a chance.

The mantis population peaked during the summer growing season for bugs

crops and kids so school wasn't a factor. The idea was to be off running

errands in the morning rather than being available for Saturday chore

assignment. After the errands, one would find the mother favorably

disposed toward releasing one from laundry duty or yardwork (which got

assigned to the sisters who never saw the merit in being 'not at home').

Arriving with a mantis and a bucketfull of trouts and perches, or a

pound of wild berries or smelling faintly of airplane gas was enough to

resolve any issues surrounding a day-long absence (Like: "Where the hell

have you been?").

Dunno. Never saw one doing much more than being cryptic except for one

munching on a cricket once and another snagging some kind of striped

bugs (possibly potato beetles) on the pepper plants - which did well

that year.

You want "thermal vent" and "rock-eating" bacteria, check out

_Helicobacter_, which loves hot-water tanks and living in our acid-filled

stomachs and is probably responsible for most ulcers . . . .

The bastards!

(_Legionella_ likes hot-water tanks, too.)

Hey, another project for Daev. In teh shed.

On second thought, perhaps we shouldn't mention this to Daev, since he'd

undoubtedly think of all kinds of nifty OTHER things for mantis' to do.

Big bugs (one of the species names, _Deinacrida_, basically means

"thunder cricket"). New Zealand. Mostly on islands off the mainland,

since they're being decimated by the bastard cats, like so much

Australasian wildlife, platypuses etc. I couldn't find the National

Geographic picture of the one sitting on the guy's hand and munching on a

carrot, which was highly impressive. Highly highly impressive. Still

remember it after twenty years or more. And even saw another reference to

the photo on the Web while I was looking:

Bugs are undoubtedly highly nutritious. High in fiber, too.

I prefer to use chicken-nature to convert barnyard and lawn bugs to

chicken. Chickens don't climb trees or vines so they wouldn't get the

bastard frankenmantiseses chowing down on my kudzu. Kudzu can be more

directly converted to ice cream or cheese or roasted goat or cow or some

such by a similar natural process. Or you can steam up a mess of it and

eat it like spinach or collards with a bit of lemon juice or vinegar and

butter (or ginger, sugar, rice wine, soy sauce and dab of wasabi if

that's your style). In short, kudzu is nutritious food.

Most of the _extremophiles_ are of the Domain _Archaea_. They're not

bacteria. With really different biochemisry. Strain 121 is the current

record holder for hyperthermophiles - grows just fine at autoclave

temperature (121C). Some of these critters do break down rocks.
